North Carolina Prison (Designed at Pennsylvania Division)
This facility consists of three 1000 cell prison facilities
on three sites in North Carolina. Due to the repetition available,
HWA helped the precaster develop a "quad" module consisting
of four cells in one 30'-90,000 lb unit. Use of these quads
facilitates production, shipping and erection by having fewer
pieces throughout the entire process. HWA also provided services
to the producer of the non-modular products. These included
insulated load bearing wall panels, columns, beams and double
tees for the support structures associated with the modular
housing units. Total precast construction value exceeds $50
million.
Franklin County Correctional Facility Malone, New York (Designed
at Pennsylvania Division)
Like most prison facilities, this was a fast track project for
which HWA did the structural design and shop drawings for all
precast modules and other components including panels, stairs,
and hollow-core planks. The modular cells were supported by
elevated CIP construction, which required distribution of loads
to ensure proper load paths to the structure below.
Corrections Corporation Of America Florence, Arizona (Designed
at Pennsylvania Division)
This 1000 cell facility was designed for seismic Zone 2A, which
was handled easily by standard components. The precaster established
an off site production facility, which HWA required, to coordinate
compatibility of design to production capability.
Lexington Fayette Detention Facility Lexington, Kentucky
(Designed at Pennsylvania Division)
This 500-cell facility was built on a high hill in horse country
with the facility taking on the "look" of a horse farm. Inside
were "quad" modules with four cells to house eight inmates,
dorm modules, which combined with two similar modules to create
dorm rooms for inmates requiring only minimum security.
Golden Grove Prison Addition St. Croix, Virgin Islands (Designed
at Pennsylvania Division)
Approximately 80 modules designed to be produced in Jacksonville,
Florida and shipped by barge to St. Croix. Seismic Zone 4 governed
the in service design while special consideration was provided
by HWA to deal with special handling conditions.

Big Sandy Prison - FBOP Inez, Kentucky (Designed at Pennsylvania
Division)
One of many Federal Bureau of Prison projects designed by HWA,
this project consisted of 4 levels of cells with an intermediate
"plenum" unit for horizontal distribution of MEP equipment.
HWA worked closely with the EOR (Engineer of record) to ensure
that lateral loads were properly distributed to lateral load-resisting
elements elsewhere in the structure.
